The Comments feature can build community and foster engagement, but for a variety of reasons some blog managers may want to turn the capability off.

The first choice you should make is whether you will limit Comments to members of the Stockton WPMU community.

From the Administrative Panel, choose Options and General. Check or uncheck the Membership option “Users must be registered and logged in to comment.” If you check the box, only Stockton users will be able to access your blog.

General Options Membership

You can next fine tune settings for Comments by accessing Options in the administrative panel and Discussion on the secondary administrative panel.

The first three check boxes have to do with allowing communication between blogs and blog users. The third check box must be checked if you want to allow comments.

If you do not want to allow Comments, uncheck “Allow people to post comments on the article.”

The rest of the Discussion Options seem self explanatory. As blog adminstrator you will probably want to be notified when a community user posts a comment or when a comment is held in moderation.

As adminstrator you may not always want to approve of comments before posting, but you probably want “Comment author to fill out name and e-mail before being allowed to post a comment.

Adminstrators choose whether a Comment author must have a previously approved comment before posting freely.

Comment Moderation and the Comment Blacklist allow administrators to filter by specific words.

If Comments have been allowed under Discussion Options, they still may be turned off when Writing Posts or Pages by opening the Discussion option to the right of the editing box and deselecting Allow Comments.
