PAPERS

Between now and Thursday, Dec. 3 at noon, you have the option of sending me your revised (from peer review) draft of your paper via e-mail. After that time, I cannot guarantee you adequate comments.

If you want an extension, I will accept requests for extensions by Tuesday, Dec 1 at noon. The final paper, printed on paper, is due Friday Dec. 4th in class. Late papers will not be accepted. If you want to hand your paper in early on Wednesday the 2nd, that’s fine. If you want to hand your paper in with an extension, that’s fine, but you should e-mail me in advance. Whether you are handing in your paper on Dec. 4th or on an extended deadline, again, late papers will not be accepted.

If you want comments on your paper, please supply me with an 8.5 by 11″ envelope addressed to you with appropriate stamps. Do not get this envelope metered on a scale at the post office since that kind of postage has a date on it and will have expired by the time I get to the post office with your paper. I will send the comments to you by the time grades are due, Dec 14th.

Seniors: you may not be able to have more than a couple of days worth of extension.

Survey

November 5th, 2009

One of my colleagues is trying to gauge how much interest there might be in a new major. If you have a second, look at the message below:

Stockton is considering developing a minor program in Digital Literacy and Multimedia Design, and we would like to know your interest level in this program. This survey contains only eight questions and takes less than one minute to complete.
Go to this website: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dF9jY291SmhxMGREQXkyZEdCaW93REE6MA

Please fill out the survey by November 13.
Thank you for your participation!

Reminder

November 4th, 2009

Tara sent a reminder to all of you: I’m pasting it below as a reminder. Please e-mail me with any questions.

“OK, now that most of you are set up with sites for your Collaboration in the Arts projects, I want to mention something I haven’t really talked too much about. In the back of the handbooks you received when I did your orientation in class, you will find a form labeled Service-Learning Agreement (it’s page 15). This is extremely important for me to keep on hand for each of you, so here’s what you need to do.

Tear out the form (doesn’t have to be neat or pretty), fill out the top part and sign it, take it to your site (each one of you will take your own), and have your project supervisor at the site fill out the middle part. Make sure it’s filled out completely – if it’s not, I’ll give it back to you to get filled out again. This agreement basically says that you agree to complete a project there and the site agrees to supervise and assist you as required.

Finally, your professor will sign it to say she approves of the project detailed on the form. I need these forms no later than Monday, November 9. If that’s going to be a problem for any reason, let me know.”

Thanks!

Skill and Values Brainstorm

November 2nd, 2009

What you get from service

Teaching skills: making a lesson plan, organizing information.

Patience

A sense of accomplishment and see how far your experiences go, how well they succeed.

Interpersonal skills with different age groups: how to put someone at ease; how to pick up on when someone is uncomfortable; noticing facial expressions;

Creativity: not only to elicit creativity from students, but to be able to improvise

Getting job experience; appreciation for a career one may never have considered.

Communication: being positive; trying to be neutral;  listening actively (acknowledging what someone has said, paraphrasing some of it).

What the “students” (or patients, etc.) get from service

The thrill of possibility.

They get role models, an example of respect, responsibility, having faith in them/positive expectation, that might influence their future decisions.

Teaching them about poetry may lead to better writing skills.

Express themselves openly:

Confidence to express or share something important happening in their lives.

Development of character: feel less shy

The value of fun is that it gives creativity a positive aspect; motivates them and makes them want to learn; you might be more likely to remember something if you’re having fun doing it.

Update on service learning

October 21st, 2009

Tara is not going to be in her office until Friday day. I’ve sent her an e-mail and will report back to you as soon as I know anything — check this space Friday or earlier. (Weds.)

Spoke with Roni today who called the Women’s Center and the Covenant House and left messages. If they don’t call back by Monday, Tara will switch you Monday when she comes back to work. Let me know if you have questions. IMPORTANT: If you were trying to work at the Women’s Center, the service learning office does not have your paperwork and needs to know your names and e-mail addresses — I don’t have the forms anymore. (Thursday 2:22PM).

I’m taking the service learning hours requirement down to 15 hours. (Saturday 12:28PM).

REMINDER

October 9th, 2009

No class meeting, Monday October 19. Use this time to adjust to your volunteering schedule and to write your 250 word account of your first day.

Directions on e-mailed lesson

September 30th, 2009

FOR HOMEWORK:

Send the lesson to me with the names of everyone in the group (one person does this).

1.      Describe the lesson. See the parts of a lesson on the blog (the directions for how to teach a poem) and see if you can break your lesson down into steps.

2.      What are the values and skills this lesson teaches in particular?

3.      What are possible problems you or your student might have when doing this lesson? How do you think you might trouble-shoot these?
