Office 2008 for Mac set for Jan. release

Microsoft Corp said it will release three versions of its Office 2008 for Mac suite in January.

1. Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition, which includes three licenses for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, an e-mail/calendar/contacts program, will cost $150, Microsoft said.

2. A $400 version aimed at professionals who use Apple Inc. computers, simply called Office 2008 for Mac, includes the same programs as Home and Student, plus the ability to connect to a Windows Exchange server.

3. The third version, the $500 Special Media Edition, adds features to the $400 configuration, including Expression Media, a program that helps computer users organize and manipulate digital photos, video and other files.

iPhone to launch outside U.S.

Its No surprise… Apple Inc.’s iPhone will go on sale in Britain on November 9 exclusively through mobile operator O2, marking the first time the combination cell phone-iPod media player will be available outside the United States.

The 8-gigabyte model will be offered for £269, or $536 — or $139 more expensive than what Apple now charges in the U.S. The British iPhone has the same technical specifications as the U.S. model, but the price includes the U.K.’s value-added tax.

What’s Wrong With the Chair: Sitting and the New Ergonomics

The article I chose to write about is about ergonomics, and how back problems aside from colds keep the most people out of work.  Galen Cranz’s book says that we have to reinvent the way we think when it comes to chairs and that we need to get away from the typical 90 degree angle chair and sit behind a table mentality. The way we sit cause erosion on the disks in our back and can eventually deform our spine and cause severe back problems for the rest of your life. The article then goes into how third world countries sit and why it is so hard for us to sit on the ground upright and blames it on the use of chairs and back support. The rest of the article goes into how to correct this problem. http://www.zafu.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CMD&Category_Code=newsletter

New satellite to sharpen Google Earth (Chelsea Speer)

A new high definition satellite for Google Earth, named WorldView I, which cost $500 million to create, is going to be launched Tuesday, September 18th.  You can now zoom in on objects/houses etc. way more than before, up to ten feet away from them.  It’s supposedly a way clearer image now, which sounds like to me, is almost getting to the point where it’s an invasion of privacy.

Military Sim Cards (Mark Prince)

I just read an article on the military sim card. This is the military ID that service members carry on them at all times. It used to be just a laminated ID card, but these new cards contain each individuals personal information as well as any medical information in the service members file. These cards are now used to access all DOD computers and you cannot access one without your card, a password, and proper security clearance. I also watched a show on the military channel that talked about smart dog tags. These allow medics or corpsman to plug their hand held computer into the dog tags and this gives them the person’s medical history and any allergies they might have. They can also plug in the current situation and help the wounded person by the prompts on the computer. The sim card link is http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/l/blsmartcards.htm

Laptops in poorer nations.

Hello my name is Izhak Shahdin and I read an article about a new laptop by Intel. Intel’s project is to make low-cost laptops for school children in poorer nations. Laptops and this technology has become so mainstream that there are now ways for even poor countries to use them especially for educational purposes. It is promoted as “the $175 laptop”. Intel donates thousands of laptops every year. It is interesting how much technology had evolved around the entire world. Read more about the project at this link: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/intels-approach-to-laptops-for-poor-children/#more-330
