Tonya:
I love your intro and i think you are heading in the right direction!!! Maybe you can add more detail about what happens when they are raped in your first paragraph. I also think that you have a good idea for you third paragraph. And if you are not sure about your 4th just compare how each society handles rape victims and how women are affected in the long run. Good job so far!!!

Paula:
I like you essay so far I also agree with Tonya that you should use some colorful words. Cant wait to see the rest of your essay! Good job!!

Paula-
I like your essay so far... and since your talking about the Janjaweed and some of the things they did, maybe you should be more descriptive and use some colorful words. I think by doing that and using actual stories from rape survivors would really draw your reader in. Good job so far!!!

What if you were someone living in Darfur in these present genocidal times. What would you do and how would you react to the situation? The men women and children living in darfur risk being killed, mutilated, raped/gang raped, branded if you survive the rape, and being thrown into fires. They also risk getting separated from their families all because the government of Sudan wants to get rid of all of the non-arabic islamic people.

There is a genocide going on in Darfur right now where the Janjaweed, hired by the government of sudan, are killing the non-arabic, islamic people. They kill or mutilate the men and teenage boys, rape/gang rape the women and teenage girls, brand them if they survive the rape, burn down the peoples' villages, and throw the younger kids into fires. If they find a pregnant woman they'll cut her stomach open and if the baby is a boy, they'll kill it, but if it's a girl they'll just leave it and the mother to die.

Brittany:
I like the fact that you ask alot of questions in the first paragraph, and you use quotes from the book in the second paragraph.

Tanya:
I like the fact that you're talking about what kind of resources the women in Darfur have and how not alot of them will say that they got raped.

heyy guys... I think I need more detail in my first paragraph it looks a little skimpy. But anyway for my third paragraph I was going to talk about the resources available to an American rape victim, but the fourth paragrah I'm not really sure, maybe the after effects of rape ? Not sure....

Brittany- Ohhhhh I like it!!!!! especially the quotes you used from the book, it really draws the reader in. Plus your first two paragrahs flow really well. I also think you should talk about the people doing the killing (Janjaweed) just a suggestion... but good work so far!

Rape as a Weapon of War

Imagine being a rape victim in Darfur, what resources do you have? What if you were arrested for seeking medical help? As a young woman in Darfur, you are the prime target for rape and embarrassment. According to Women's News, the Jangaweed will rape woman in public, in front of their husbands, relatives or community. After there are no reliable clinics to depend on for medical attention.

For rape victims of Darfur, clinics are scarce, due to the small amount of reported rapes, and the clinics that are available, do not carry the essential tools, such as a rape kit or the morning after pill (Refugees International).

Brittany Boone

Do you ever go to bed afraid that you will be woken up in the middle of the night to be killed? Have you ever thought your family is not safe in our own home? Has it ever crossed your mind that you may not be able to protect your own family? How would you feel if you knew who was killing your family and the people in your village? Would you be mad, upset, scared, or even confused if you realized your own government was reasonable for these killings? The Janjaweed are hired by the government of Sudan to kill non-Arab Darfurians, despite sharing the same religion and level of class.

The killing of non-Arab Darfurians is happening in Sudan, Africa. The killing of these people is considered a genocide. According to the book Not on Our Watch, “Genocide is unique among ‘crimes against humanity’ or ‘mass atrocity crimes’ because it targets, in whole or in part, a specific racial, religious, national, or ethnic group for extinction” (Not on Our Watch, 3). These groups may be killed, have serious bodily or mental harm inflected on them, or even prevent births (Not on Our Watch, 3). Genocide in Darfur began in 2003 and many people have been killed and even more have been displaced. The Janjaweed are reasonable for the killing of these innocent people.
