The iRiver T60
The iRiver T60 is a handy mp3 recorder that we will be using to record John Milton’s Paradise Lost in Spring 2008. Below it is pictured turned off.
From left to right, you can see the microphone (that small hold near the left edge), the view screen, and the toggle switch. I have set the recorders you have received to “voice record,” so you should not have to use the toggle switch.
The next image shows the top of the T60:
You see the battery door. I have provided some extra AAA batteries. If you need more, let me know. You also see three silver buttons. The one to the left turns on the T60. Simply press it once and within a short period of time you’ll see the display light up. Below is the T60 turned on and ready to record.
Don’t worry about the middle button — we won’t need it for our recording. The button to the right turns on the voice recorder. The display on your iRiver is set to go off after about 10 seconds to conserve battery life. When you have finished recording, hit the right button once to wake up the machine (to turn on the display) and then once more to stop recording. Finally, press the left button to turn your T60 off.
Once you have made a recording, you may want to edit the file using Audacity sound editing software. To do so you need to transfer sound files to a personal computer. Below is an image of the bottom of the T60. To the right is the “lock” button. Don’t shift it. Just keep it pushed to the left. To the right you’ll see the door to the usb port.
Opening the port is a bit of a pain. You need to get your fingernail under the door and pull up. It comes up easy enough once you’ve done it a time or two. Long fingernails help.
Once the door is open, make sure the T60 is turned off, then attach the small end of the usb cable, which I have provided, to the T60. Attach the other end to a usb port on your computer. Then turn on the T60 but pressing the left hand button at the top of the recorder. You should see something like the image below.
