This is an illustration of Tessie Hutchinson when she realizes that she has the paper with the black dot drawn on it. At this point in the story the reader does not know what Tessie has been chosen for but from this picture one can tell that the prize is a horrific one.

This is a picture of rocks. It can be at the beginning of the story when the children are stacking up and guarding his and her own piles of rocks or it can be a morbid shot of Tessie Hutchinson after she has received her prize. A symbolic picture because the story revolves around a tradition of stoning the winner of the lottery.

An ordinary wooden box. Although this wooden box holds tradition and is respected throughout by the villagers. This box holds the papers the townspeople will choose from to decide who will be sacrificed for a plentiful harvest.

This picture is what we expect to see when we hear the word lottery. The colorful balls, the excitement of the numbers being called, the anticipation of winning millions of dollars. The only thing the present day lottery and the lottery in the story have in common is whoever wins will have their live changed forever.
