No class on the 28th either

It is with great regret that I inform you of my ongoing disease. I have progressed some since Tuesday, but have just gotten to another rotten part of the sickness.

We’ll straighten out the syllabus when I return on Tuesday. Stay well. You might as well start Book II of PL. Again, with true regret. Tom Kinsella

I will not make class tonight, February 26th

I have some sort of unfortunate disease that keeps me light-headed, dizzy, feverish, and non-sensical. I figure I should not attend class tonight. We’ll just push things back one class. I’ll straighten out the schedule on Thursday. At least read Book I of Paradise Lost.

As you read (or reread) Book I, consider the character of Satan. What do you think of him given Milton’s descriptions? Good, bad, heroic? We’ll talk about all of this.

The word that no one annotates

Take a look at “Milton’s Words” to the right for a discussion of “endue.”

Breathing inspiration

Following up on our last bit of discussion on February 12th, I’ve done some OED work on the word “inspire.” See it at the bottom of the page “Milton’s Words.”

Meter & Form

At the end of class tonight I showed you two good texts on meter and form. The first is Paul Fussell’s oft-used Poetic Meter & Poetic Form. The second is John Hollander’s Rhyme’s Reason. I find Fussell’s work to be more in-depth and theoretical and Hollander’s work more approachable but slight.

The Fussell text is a bit pricier than I thought, with a few under $15 on www.abebooks.com and several used under $25 on Amazon. The Hollander, new, is under $10 on amazon with many well under that price. I guess that is the text I’d suggest if you wanted to purchase one.

Here is a link to your first take home examination. I’ll bring paper copies to class on Tuesday, but I thought you might want to take a sneak peek.
