My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching objective is to nurture students so that they are able to recognize their own strengths. I accomplish this by providing a challenging and developmentally appropriate curriculum in an environment that is conducive to learning. I create lesson objectives that excite students enough to make them want to learn and display the skills necessary to complete their goals. By encouraging students to work together in cooperative groupings, I create a classroom atmosphere where students feel secure and where their individual input is essential to the success of the entire class.
I consider every child educable. My philosophy of teaching is to give students what they need in order to be educated. I have a constructivist view towards teaching; lessons related to meaningful experiences become deeply entrenched. With careful planning, I make lessons memorable and applicable to the children’s own lives. I also believe that if children feel safe in the classroom, they will learn. My goal is to provide a classroom community where every child can feel secure, students are encouraged to treat one another with respect, and multiple perspectives and cultures are celebrated.
To educate students using a constructivist model, they should have the opportunity to reflect upon the relationships of lessons to their own lives. Problem-based learning is one way of achieving this goal. It is too easy to lose a student’s attention if they feel that the subject matter has no relationship to them. Allowing students the chance to arrive at conclusions themselves through guided practice will foster their ability to take risks and solve problems independently. Guided practice allows students the ownership of their own learning.
To educate every child, it is crucial to address the different learning styles of students as well as their individual needs. I set singular goals for each student that will progress them toward the curriculum objectives. Some students need behavior modifications and rewards while others need challenges beyond the curriculum. I provide choices through differentiated instruction and allow students of all skill levels to participate actively in classroom activities. By building upon their skill levels and encouraging them to reach further, I provide them with the opportunity to succeed in the classroom and in life.
One of the most important factors in my philosophy of teaching is communication with the student’s family. I keep in close contact with the parents and guardians and make myself available to them often. I post upcoming events on my eboard, and email or call parents with updates. Periodic newsletters, movies of our activities, online scrapbooks and podcasts are just a few tools I use to keep in touch.
