Regular solutions & eutectic phase diagrams

Posted by richardm on 31st October 2008

We continued our discussion of the regular solution model and its application to phase diagrams. We then explored eutectic diagrams and several applications of them.

Non-ideal binary systems

Posted by richardm on 29th October 2008

We talked a bit more about ideal binary phase diagrams and the associated cooling curves. We then discussed the case of chemical interactions through the use of activity and the activity coefficient. Finally we started a discussion of a model on non-ideality, the regular solution model.

Binary Phase Diagram

Posted by richardm on 27th October 2008

We developed an ideal binary phase diagram for a two component system that can exist in the solid and liquid phase. We extended this a bit to discuss the application to distillation.

Single-component phase equilibria: practice problems

Posted by richardm on 24th October 2008

We did some practice problems, which we’ll finish on Friday.

The Clapeyron Equation

Posted by richardm on 20th October 2008

We derived the Clapeyron Equation to describe the coexistence curve for a single component system. This required a few assumptions which led us to the Clausius-Clapeyron Equation for the equilibrium between a condensed, pure phase and the vapor phase.

Phase equilibria

Posted by richardm on 17th October 2008

After finishing up the practice problems from last time, we took a look at phase equilibria in single component systems. This led to the construction of our first (of many) phase diagrams.

More on reaction equilibrium

Posted by richardm on 15th October 2008

We discussed reactions involving condensed phases. We then tackled some practice problems.

Working with chemical equilibrium

Posted by richardm on 13th October 2008

We tackled two examples of applying our framework of chemical equilibrium to chemical reactions. We also saw how the pressure impacts gas phase reactions.

Chemical equilibrium

Posted by richardm on 10th October 2008

Using the idea of chemical potential we can up with the familiar expression for the equilibrium constant of a gas-phase reaction. We then looked at the temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant.
