Mixing entropy, chemical reactions

Posted by richardm on 8th October 2008

We wrapped up a discussion on the mixing of ideal gases by exploring how the mixing is driven by entropic effects. Since there is no chemical interactions in the case of ideal systems, the enthalpy of mixing is zero. Finally, we began our exploration of chemical equilibrium in reactions by looking at how the free energy changed with the reaction progress.

Chemical potential of an ideal gas

Posted by richardm on 6th October 2008

We took a long look at how you come up with the expression for the chemical potential of an ideal gas. This lead us to consider the mixing of ideal gases, which is completely driven by entropy.

Gibbs Free Energy & equilibrium

Posted by richardm on 3rd October 2008

We discussed some important relationships obtained when considering our new thermodynamic function G. We explored an example of applying G to a situation involving surface work in determining when spontaneous wetting will occur. We also introduced a new concept, chemical potential, for considering chemical work.
