Jennifer has experienced many traumatic events in her short life.  While traveling in an airship with her parents, it crashed and everyone but her died.  She is “found” by Gregory and locked in his basement for months until Wendy is able to free her.  She eventually is taken to the orphanage where she is tormented by the other children.  Then she witnesses the massacre of these children by a madman.  Although she refers to herself as the “unlucky girl” throughout the game, she is in my opinion, very lucky indeed; she is the only one to have walked away from these horrific experiences.  She unfortunately lost her memories, which I feel allowed her to retain her sanity.  The entire game Rule of Rose is the search for and recovery of these memories.

Most people would agree that they would not function normally after experiencing the things Jennifer had.  In order for her to go on with her life (assuming she is still alive, of course, but that’s a whole other subject ;-) ) she had to block out many of her memories, and the censor the ones she retained.  For example, I believe that this is a reasonable explaination for the Clara boss scene; this was not an actual memory of a real encounter with Clara, but rather a symbollic struggle.  I highly doubt that Jennifer actually saw Clara, with legs tied, attached to pulleys in a bedroom.  I do believe that Jennifer saw Clara near death, or dead already.  As any young child would be (and many adults) she was traumatized by this sight, and turned it into something else.  I believe this is true for all the supernatural/non-realistic encounters that Jennifer has.
