I recieved your other post, Jake, but it went into spam automatically- I will figure out how to correct that. I understand that you see the seal hunt just as any other animal killing - like farm animals - and if it makes you feel any better- I think they’re all cruel. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve already blogged about KFC and I plan on writing more about factory farming. The fact of the matter is, just because it is a common and accepted process does not mean that it is right or just. Thanks for the evidence, but a few random cases just isn’t enough for me. I don’t see what other hidden agenda an animal rights organization could have, other than animal rights. They are non-profit organizations that try to change laws etc to protect animals from abuses such as the seal hunt- because they recieve a lot of donations from caring people makes them evil? Im sure there are some individuals who may go a little to far, or maybe even stretch the truth - who knows - but there are people like that in every aspect of the world - every job, every city, every organization. IT does not refllect the organization as a whole. That doesn’t even matter -The bottom line is that the seal hunt is cruel - just like factory farming, and it should be stopped ASAP. You cannot deny that the seals cry as they are beat with hooked clubs. That doesn’t seem the least bit cruel to you?

I get my sources right from the source. I live in a small outport town in Newfoundland. Also, there is much info on the net that shows that these animal right groups make up or embellish most of their statements. Even Paul Watson(Sea Shepherd Conservation Society) during an interview in 1978 with CBC Radio said that these groups are against the seal hunt because it is an easy way to raise money and it is a profit maker for the organizations.

Following a public outcry and investigation, the man in the film, Gus Poirier of Prince Edward Island, signs an affidavit declaring that he was “employed by a group of photographers … to skin a large seal for the film.

I’m not trying to make you or anyone else like the seal hunt, I just want to show that groups like peta, hsus, etc, got an agenda other than the welfare of animals. The seal hunt is no more crueler than any slaughter house in the world, so why should the fishermen who participate in the hunt have to lose a vital part of their income when other animals are being killed everyday? What is the difference between a cow, chicken, pig, or a seal?

Hi Jake. Thanks for your post. Although you may find things you don’t like in this post, I researched all of my information and sited my sources. You can take from it what you like, but the sources are there. You however, did not source the information you put in your post. Where did you get that information? By the way, you can argue all you want about the studies being conducted, but as far as I’m concerned, a picture is worth a thousand words -and the pictures I’ve seen are by no means pleasant. How you do you explain those? They look pretty cruel to me.

I can’t believe that all these lies are still being told about the seal hunt..,

As any abattoir worker or hunter will explain to you, based upon experience, that skinning an animal is difficult enough when they are dead and near impossible to do when they are alive.

“Sometimes the hunters use guns, which seems more humane until you find out that they are unlikely to shoot twice, because the more bullet holes in the skin the less money they make”
The above statement blows holes in the “skinned alive” statement. Common sense tells you that when the value of the pelt depends on the quality (straight cuts improve the value) it makes no sense to ruin a pelt by trying to skin the animal alive. Study after study by reputable, international veterinarians have shown time after time that skinning alive is a lie perpetrated by so called independent studies conducted, paid for and written by the staff members of animal rights groups and never peer group reviewed for methodology or accuracy.

“Oh and the best part about all this cruelty- the only real use for the seals is their fur - for fashion. The meat is usually left to rot on the ice. Wow.”
Seals provide four products: fur, leather, fat (rendered for Omega3 medicinal oil) and meat. The bulk of the meat is located in the “flippers”, which the sealers take leaving the mostly meatless carcasses on the ice to return to the eco-system, as the ice melts the carcasses slip back into the ocean and provide food for other species. This eliminates the need to dispose of offal in landfills, a serious problem for land-based abattoirs: a green practice.

Sealing is only one part of their earnings. The monies earned from sealing may range from hundreds to thousands of dollars(the average pay for sealers is between $8000 - $10,000 per season) – depending upon markets and environmental conditions - and combined with fishing, farming and other activities enables them to maintain the life force of coastal villages. It is the total earnings from all their economic activities – including sealing – that enables rural peoples to survive. Rural life is much like a mosaic composed of small stones. Remove one stone and the beautiful mosaic crumbles as the cohesion of all the stones holding the mosaic together. This is the reality of economic life in rural communities.

Then to make up their lost income, the fishermen will have to take even more seals.

“One easy way to do this is by not eating at RED LOBSTER, because they support the Canadian Seal Hunt.”
Red Lobster is not involved in the seal hunt in any way and does not buy or sell seal products. In fact, they don’t buy any products at all from Newfoundland.

Keep buying those H$U$ t-shirts and keep sending in your donations. Someone as to pay for Wayne Pacelle’s annual salary that tops $300,000.
