Author Biography

Ernest Miller Hemmingway was born July 21st, 1899.  His Father was a physician who was able to gave him various experiences which most young men of the time would only dream.  Traveling, hunting, and fishing as well as stable home life was a major influence on his writing discipline.  Attending public school until graduation, Hemmingway soon found his way to the Kansas City Star.  He worked as a reporter for a brief moment in time, until his life took him to pre-war Europe, where he remained until after the Great War had ended.

Ernest Hemmingway, a famous American writer, expresses true masculinity not only in his dialog but the events which his protagonists are contently facing.  His stories reflect his life in various symbolic and concrete ways.  The chaos that rips through his characters mirrored his own experiences, even up to the end, when he took his own life.

Ernest Hemmingway had the opportunity to be influenced by Ezra Pound.  The fact that Pound was a sexist could have added to Hemmingway’s masculine writing.  Hemmingway’s personal experience of big game hunting, deep sea fishing, and a war veteran only add to this gendered writing.  They also were prime sources for narratives like “The Old Man and the Sea” and “A Farewell to Arms.”

The writing styles of Hemmingway have become a classic representation of American writers.  His attention to details and his development of characters have set the precedent of what great writing is all about.  Not only his novels, but his short stories have impacted the young readers of both genders and all races.  His connection was not only with his time, but our time as well.
